Mount Kinabalu Expedition-Part II: Scaling to the peak!

Ya Rabbiiii...... dasyat betul! dah nak masuk 3 tahun!!!!.. baru terhegeh2 nak hapdet Mount KK expedition.... huhu..... dah hampir lupa peristiwa2 penting... haha... siap mount KK dah kena gempa pun... daripada umur Haziq 3 tahun masa tu... sampai dah ada adik pun si Haziq ni.... aku masih terhegeh2 macam apa ntah.... mengenang tragedy gempa di mount KK.. rasa sungguh bersimpati dengan climbers... esp porters & mountain guiders di sana... they are soo kind person.. & responsible also... hmm... ujian utk mereka... & tabik spring utk these people! once i heard what they have done to help & save the victims... I know already... that is the SABAHAN! not to be racist or what.. but I do respect our borneo friends... kadar toleransi kaum mereka tersangatlah tinggi... & being there.. in Sabah for almost 5 years... & having very nice foster family there... i know very much... Mount KK adalah kebanggaan & kesayangan semua orang sabah... tragedy macam ni sungguh menyedihkan for them.... gunung kebanggaan runtuh sampai bertukar rupa... lebih2 lagi ditambah pula dengan kematian yg ramai... so sad... alangkan tragedy Ellie James pun masih diingati biarpun kematian this poor girl berlaku pada 2001... inikan pulak gempa yg sedahsyat ni...

our porter cum mountain guide (yg lelaki tu je...).. these 2 beautiful ladies r the porters of mount KK! aiyohhhh.... meruntun kalbu tengok muatan dibelakang mereka!
tapi ni la hero sebenar kami.. si Tam ni ha... (blue jacket)

so this is it... though i know its already basi sampai boleh buat MOL...

The climb has begun......

Kinabalu trail.... study hak ni dulu...

As intro for this entry....I would like to mention here....expedition to the summit of Mt Kinabalu...there's 2 most beautiful point yg memang digilai pendaki...Villosa Point & of course the peak!!!!! When my hubby told me his plan to climb kinabalu...terus 2 point ni yg terbayang di mata....

SCALING TO THE PEAK!

The expedition day......early morning....woke up at 6 am...then go for shower..fuhhhhh....sejukkk..heater pulak kejap panas..kejap sejuk......sakan nak pujuk si Haziq mandi...akhirnya mandi jugak...

6.00 am....mana la si Tam ni x sampai2....katanya pagi2 akan sampai....hmm...teponla kejap...tadaaa.....rupanya dah ada kat luar hostel since 5.45 am! hohoho..awal nye....so, we pack our things & Tam drove us to the Balsam Restaurant. dah kena check-out from Grace Hostel...

Having breakfast....at Balsam Rest...laporrr...but nak makan lebih2 x brani la plak...lebih2 lagi bila Tam dah tegur...jgn makan banyak sangat...nanti problem plak masa mendaki...
Deanna & Haziq seems enjoy their breakfast...makan x berenti..macam2 diambilnya..done with breakfast...telan panadol dulu....takut sakit kepala masa climbing.....

Haziq & Deanna @ Balsam Restaurant...breakfast

My hubby & Tam went to Kinabalu Park Office to register for the climb & get the permit, pay for porter, get the mountain guide.....& all of us dihantar ke Timpohon Gate to start the climb......

Deanna & Haziq tunjukkan climber's pass...muka bangga gilaaa.......

here we are!!! the journey begin!

7.30 am...we were the earliest! nobody there that time.....sempat bergambar dengan tupai2 yg dah mesra hidup dgn orang...& bergambar sekeluarga dgn berlatarbelakangkan gunung kinabalu....

With Tam...my foster brother....my only sabahan's family yg join...

bergambar kat Timpohon Gate dengan latar belakang gunung kinabalu...
first attraction yg jumpa..Carson Fall....singgahla sebentar bergambar...

Carson Fall
Sambil mendaki (???? berjalan naik bukit kot...)..mata x lepas perhatikan kiri..kanan..atas...& of course bawah (track)...tinjau2 apa yg menarik dimata utk dipandang.....I love the biodiversity...the flora & the fauna (hehe..sekadar gonggok...katak...)...so, memang tangan x lepas dari camera & handfon la...snap sana sini yg sempat.....masa awal2 pendakian ni..memangla excited giler!!

Haziq seems to enjoy the climb..seronok sakan nak naik gunung....yelah..mula2 je dia jalan...x sampai pun 500m dah merengek penat...so...as expectedla....papa kena dukung....nasib baik jumpa baby carrier yg boleh letak budak size up to 18 kg....RM350 satu taw......beli kat Mothercare Mid Valley....kat situ jek yg jumpa carrier that suits my specs...
Haziq..mula2 je jalan..lepas tu...hmmm.....

Deanna seems very excited too!

Mula2 memang seronok...first time jalan2 satu family naik gunung...gunung kinabalu la pulakkk........mulut masing2 x berenti bercakap..ada je topik semasa....tapi dalam hati aku...x sabar berjumpa musuh lama aku.... ni haaa.......

dulu2... kami panggil tangga steroid...... why?? try la dulu.. baru tahu kenapa
fuhh....kalo dulu (year 2000)..first time tengok tangga ni....telan air liur kami semua bila pandang tangga ni dari bawah....almost 90 degree! but now..macam dah slant sikit kot.... beria2 aku tanya Tam... betul ke ni tangga steroid tu...so, Tam yg dah more than 30 times panjat Kinabalu angguk2 banyak kali.... iya la tu.....kalo dulu (year 2000) tangga ni dibuat dari kayu.. with handrail yg dah reput...now Tanah tu yg ditarah dijadikan tangga...

Sampai dah check point yg pertama... its more than 1000 m above sea level.... rehat jap...top up air.... buang air..... &... si kenit tu mula merenggek nak susu..... so.. buat susu dia....& of course la.... bergambar....

Haziq baru dapat susu...

mula2 ni.... masih lagi tracking dekat2... borak2... gambar2.... gelak gelak.......

lama-lama... dah mula renggang2...... cakap pun dah kurang.... sebab nak save energy.

Deanna dah mula "lentok"

sampai masanya.. mula la sapa larat dia jalan dulu... hehe... aku... dengan the "mountain guide" yng dah mati lesen ni la jadi peneman.... Mizi & Haziq depaaan sekali.... Deanna kat tengah2... & our mountain guide Mr Joseph... tataw la kat mana... blakang sekali... malas nak jalan terhegeh2 dengan kami kot... Tam aje yg setia jadi peneman...

Sign board stesen pemancar RTM...

This is to share the tracks menuju ke puncak di Mt Kinabalu.... tangga... tangga... & tangga....haish... donno la what others think... but i think tangga is more stressful compare to track biasa... i feel that i have to use more energy to climb tangga... letih gilerr!!

Tupai yg jinak.... ada nampak???

Dipertengahan jalan... hujan la pulak...nasib jugak x lebat.... bergegas2 kami pakai baju ujan.... dah almost 2 hrs...baru la reda....walaupun gerimis tapi Alhamdulillah... dah selesa sikit...

He is the only baby boy yg ada that time... hmmm... kuat jugak En Mizi ye... dokong si nakal Haziq ke atas sampai Laban Rata... awwwww   :-p

view in Laban Rata Restaurant

Oleh sebab dah tak boleh nak makan... & hari pun nak malam... hujan la plak....... its 7.30 at that time.... so we have to proceed to Gunting Lagadan Rest house.... utk berehat before climb to the peak awal2 pagi nanti...

its still raining at that time.... from Laban Rata, we can see air mengalir dah macam air terjun! phewww.... macam mana nak panjat nanti??? we just pray supaya hujan berenti...

dah macam air terjun daaa.....
this was taken from Laban Rata

Gambar di Gunting Lagadan??  xde.. x ambil langsung... xde mood nak ambil gambar... mood nak rehat je adaa... letih tauuuu.... perghhh... dahla sejuk.. nasib ada long john.. woolen sweater... winter jacket... fuhhh.. lega sunggguh! selesa noqsss.... hahaha... dulu2 masa pergi dgn coursemate tahun 2000.. being a student... dengan  bajet ciput... pengetahuan yg sangat cetek... setengah mati aku & kawan2 masa tu menahan sejuk... sekarang dah panndaiiiiii....... hahaha...

hujan masih renyai2 & kadang2 melebat sehingga tengah malam... dalam hati berdoa juga semoga hujan berenti.. kalau ujan x berenti.. macam mana pula nak naik...

by 2 am... Tam & our mountain guide dah mula kejutkn kami utk start climbing... dengan cuaca sesejuk ais... hujan dah hampir berenti... cuma tinggal renyai2 yg sikiit je... sesekali... terasa malasnya... tetapi.. bila kenangkan $500 yg dibayar... aku kuatkn jugak semangat utk mendaki... huhu... bila nak kejutkn Haziq je.. Tam x benarkan,... reason.. dia risau Haziq tak tahan cuaca di atas... so,... he offer to take care Haziq di Gunting Lagadan.. let the mountain guide bawa naik kami bertiga...  hmm....... ikut jela.. he knows best

mula mendaki seawal 2 am... slowly... slowly.. dgn trek berbatu2 & keadaan yg gelap... hujan masih renyai... about 300 m mendaki.. deanna mengadu sesak nafas & sakit kepala... aku pun sebenarnya dah mula rasa jugak.. tapi sebab nak bagi dorongan pada anak yg sorang ni.. kutahan juga...

bila dia mula mengadu.. cuba2 pujuk juga... tapi dia mmg betul2 x tahan... so, En Mizi pun dengan berat hati minta mountain guide utk escort Deanna turun ke Gunting Lagadan. Kami teruskan lg pendakian..

dalam sejam mendaki.. kepala & dada dah tak tahan... sakit kepala mencucuk2 sampai bengang telinga... cuba utk slow down climbing pun x de effect apa2... at that time... its almost 4.30 am..
i was thinking at that time to surrender sahajalah & let my husband continue with climbing... i was thinking that its better for him to go without me as i will only makes him slow... whats is my mind is... that sayat2 gate will be closed for climbers at 5.30 am... & now already 4.30 am.. he have to be fast if he wants to reach peak... so... with heavy heart.. i surrender... sob.. sob... sob... for 2nd time... i failed again!

so.. i have to climb down alone... sorang2 dalam keadaan gelap gelita... takut?? mau tidak... sorang2 atas gunung dalam keadaan gelap gelita... terasa juga dalam hati.... tapi dlm 10-20 mins berjalan... tiba2 melintas beberapa org turun jugak... those people... loser like me jugak... eheheh..... tak boleh teruskan sebab x tahan sejuk & eqipment x cukup.. they r students dr kolej komuniti daripada whole malaysia... being students... they dont know about gunung... & mungkin x tahu apa yg patut bawa ke atas gunung sana... kesian....

teruskan perjalanan turun perlahan2.. dengan students yg berpapasan turun juga... so... i take my time & enjoy turun slow2... menikmati pandangan malam yg gelap gelita... seronok jugak rupanya.... dengan hari yg semakin mencerah... agak seronok juga melihat peubahan hari di gunung... sayangnya... x terfikir pulak nak ambil gambar masa tu....

sampai di gunting lagadan dan around 6.30 am... jenguk bilik... tam sedang menjaga si kecik haziq & deanna tengah seronok tido... hmmm.... tengok muka tam macam terkejut aku dah sampai waktu tu... buat muka penmyek je lah... lepak katil sebelah & tido kejap.... kononnya nak tido... tapi tak boleh tido pun... sebabnya... encik mountain guide yg mati lesen ni dah "sound"... jangan tido kak... tak boleh tido.... sebab letih... laju je mulut aku tanya.. pesal plakkk??? letih dowhh... pening & sesak nafas lagi ni....

dengan muka menahan sabar jawab si tam... "kak... turun dr gunung x boleh tidur... bahaya... tam takut nanti kakak ndak bangun terusss...."

huarrrghhhhh....... takut plak dengar... eiii.... sabo jekla... ikut jek la cakap org yg banyak pengalaman... kang apa2 hal... dapat mama tiri baru anak2 aku karang... ahaksss.....

nak abiskan masa... meninjau sekeliling gunting lagadan... sambil2 tu.. terbayang encik somi di puncak... wallaweehhhhhh... sonotnya lah hai..... kalau diatas sanunnnnn.....

jenguk2 track ke puncak bila hari dah cerah.. nampak pendaki2 dah mula turun.. alahaii... sayupnya... curamnyaaa... bila bjalan dlm gelap.. x nampak apa2... dah siang .. amekkaw... baru tahu...

sebab incik somi aje yg panajt sensorang... kita tengok jelah apa yg ada...

proudly smiling at peak!

around 7.30 my hubby reach Gunting lagadan... rest about 10-15 mins... were ready to climb down.
sesambil... sempat la bgambar di sekitar gunting lagadan

Having breakfast @ Gunting lagadan... snap few more pics... & during breakfast.. baruku tahu kenapa la Mizi beria nak kami 4 beranak daki Kinabalu at this winter time,... sebab nak celebrate outr 10thy wedding anniversary rupanya...

tiba2.. ting tong... dah pukul 3 kot.... blum sampai lagi kat kaki gunung... adehhh.... so... apa lagi... brenti bcakap & mula fokus turun laju2.. kali ni aku ajak guide berlari2 anak turun... maklum la... masa turun boleh la ko berlari,... cer masa naik... lebam muka tu karang.....
bila sampai carson fall... wahhh.... berbunga2 rasa hati... siap brenti jap cuci mata kat situ ngan Mr guide... then sambung lari2 anak lagi... thennn...... sampaila kat bawahnya itu.... nampak sudah pondok timpohon.... wahh... girangnya lah hati... esp bila deanna & Mizi dah mula panggil nama... terus aku nampak tilan & bantal.... ahaksss...

tapi eh... apasal plak kakiku ini?/..... takleh angkat nak naik tangga tanah tu.... adehhh.... kakiku sudah keras bah!!! aiyohhh..... alahai.... nak angkat kaki naik tangga tu jadi macam susah giler... terpaksa angkat kaki dengan bantuan tangan.. satu persatu naik anak tangga.... dah macam org lumpuh baru blajar berjalan pulak rasanya... dah separuh jalan tiba2 terdengar bunyi2an dari ramai org...

"yeay...."
"hurrayyyy...."

Gladiolus- the story of....

Old Spice

Trader horn
White prosperity

Semasa pantang bersalin tempohari... bermula seruan bercucuk tanam semula setelah 9 bulan terlantar atas katil sebab pregnancy disorders

& each gladiolus ada namanya yg tersendiri

tapi sebab mokcik ni xde masa nak translate article.. kita baca aje lah copy paste article ni.. fuiyyooo... bz dowhhhh la ni...

Gladiolus is also commonly referred to by the name of its genus - Gladiolus, the plural form of which can be Gladiole, Gladioluses or Gladioli. Gladiolus is also known as the Sword Lily, due to its sword shaped leaves, or Corn Lily.

The genus Gladiolus comprises 260 species, 250 of which are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia. The impressive flower spikes of Gladioli come in a wide array of beautiful colors. Kingdom

Gladiolus

The Gladiolus flower signifies remembrance. It also expresses infatuation, telling the receiver that he or she pierces the heart. It also stands for strength of character, faithfulness and honor.
Some Interesting Facts About Gladiolus Flowers
  • An ancient name for the gladiolus was xiphium, from the Greek word xiphos, also meaning sword.
  • The Gladiolus flower is the birth flower for August.
  • Gladiolus represented the Roman Gladiators, before the African Gladioli became popular in the West.
  • African Gladioli were imported in large quantities to Europe from South Africa during the 18th century.
  • Most of the more than 10,000 named Gladioli cultivars probably were derived from just seven species native to South Africa and first brought to European gardens in the late 17th century.
  • The Mediterranean and British Gladiolus flowers were used to treat physical ailments.
  • Some parts of the Gladiolus plant are poisonous if ingested and handling some species may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.
  • The English used the gladiolus flower's stem base (corms) as a poultice and for drawing out thorns and splinters; powdered corms mixed with goat's milk were commonly used to soothe the symptoms of colic.
  • Scab, Fusarium Rot and Yellows, Penicillium Storage Rot, Leaf Spots and Blights, Stromatinia Corm Dry Rot, Virus and Phytoplasma Disease are the Common Gladioli diseases.

About Gladiolus Flowers and Plants

Gladiolus bulbs are not true bulbs. Gladiolus bulbs, in botanical terminology, are referred to as corms. A corm is a shortened and thickened section of the stem that appears at the base of the plant. On the corm are buds for each layer of leaves. Except for production of new varieties, Gladioli are not cultivated from seed.

Gladiolus plants are attractive, perennial herbs and semi hardy in temperate climates. They grow from rounded, symmetrical corms that are enveloped in several layers of brownish, fibrous tunics.

The fragrant Gladiolus flower spikes are large and one-sided, with secund, bisexual flowers.

Each Gladiolus flower is subtended by 2 leathery, green bracts. The sepals and the petals are almost identical in appearance, and are termed tepals. They are united at their base into a tube-shaped structure. The dorsal tepal is the largest, arching over the three stamens.

The outer three tepals of the Gladiolus are narrower. The Gladiolus perianth is funnel-shaped, with the stamens attached to its base. The Gladiolus style has three filiform, spoon-shaped branches, each expanding towards the apex.

The gladioli thrip, a very tiny, black, winged insect, is a real threat to Gladioli flowers and plants. It sucks the juice from the plant, leaving a silvery appearance, eventually causing the plant to turn brown. Gladioli thrips also cause deformed flowers and prevent flower spikes from opening.

Growing/Planting Gladiolus
  • Gladiolus can be propagated by dividing rhizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs (including offsets).
  • Plant Gladiolus as early in the spring as the soil is fit to work.
  • Gladiolus corms can readily be purchased at your local garden center or nursery, though they can easily be grown from seeds.
  • Sow the seeds in early spring, in a well-drained flat 8 to 10 inches deep, that is filled with two thirds loam and one third leaf mold or peat moss, with a good amount of sand added.
  • Plant the seeds an inch apart and cover with about 1/4-inch of soil. If the soil is kept fairly moist, the seeds should sprout in a few weeks.
  • Set the container of seedlings outside in a fairly sunny location during the summer months and don't disturb until the leaves have died down in fall.
  • At this time, take out the small corms, store for the winter, and plant in a border about 3 inches apart in March.
  • The blooming season can be stretched by making succession plantings, by planting bulbs of several sizes, and by using varieties which take different lengths of time to mature.

Gladioli Plant Care
  • Apply a 2 to 4-inch layer of mulch around the gladiolus to retain moisture and control weeds.
  • Water plants during the summer if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week.
  • Remove individual flowers as they fade, and cut back flower stalks once all flowers have gone by.
  • Leave foliage intact to mature and rejuvenate the corm for next year.
  • Mulch beds with a layer of hay or straw for winter protection.
  • Remove excess soil, cut the stalks to within an inch of the corms and let them cure for 1 to 2 weeks in a warm, airy location.
  • Then remove and discard the oldest bottom corms and store the large, new corms in plastic mesh bags in a well-ventilated, 35 to 45 degree F room. Replant in spring.

Gladiolus Bulb Care
  • Gladiole suffer when forced to compete with weeds.
  • Remove the weeds.
  • The new corm and the new roots are formed on top of the old one during the growing season.
  • Deep cultivation when near the roots breaks off the new roots and slows up growth.
  • Thrips cause deformed flowers and prevent flower spikes from opening at all.
  • Thrips on bulbs should be killed before planting. In the garden, start dusting or spraying with Fungicide when leaves are six inches tall.
  • Water is essential for growing Gladiolus successfully.
  • Rain seldom supplies enough moisture, but start watering when there are five leaves on the plants.
  • Storing the Bulbs
  • Leave 1 inch of the stem and cut.
  • Store Gladiolus at about 70 degrees for a month to dry the corms.
  • Divide the bulbs, clean the debris.
  • Let them be at 70 degrees for a week.
  • Then store at 50 degrees.(Do not wash the bulbs with water)
  • Store them in a box or tub lined with peat

Memahami biji benih: Generasi F1, F2, F3........

source: google
Need to understand biji benih punya sifat juga...
Reason:

  1. jangan salah beli biji benih yg xde kualiti.. biar mahal.. tapi berkualiti
  2. jika ada niat nak menjual/ sedekah biji benih drp pokok yg kita tanam... kena paham dulu asal usul benih kita... supaya biji benih yg kita jual tu sama kualiti dgn induk dia
source: google

This brief info is obtained from discussion drp forum http://www.tomatoville.com...
link ke forum http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=17088

Happy reading!!!!
________________________________________________________________________

Please explain F1, F2, F3...
I encountered F1 for the first time on my pepper forum, but really don't understand a few points:

1. If I plant F1 seeds, will the seeds from the resultant pods be viable, or do I have to buy more seed?

2. Is an F1 plant hardier than the non F1, in general?

3. Can two different F1's hybridise?

Cheers!

_________________________________________________________

A little background...

For crosses you have parents (P) and offspring (Filial generations) F1 = children of parents, F2 = grandchildren, F3 = great grandchildren, etc.

At its simplest, vegetable varieties have two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. The forms of these genes (alleles) can either be the same (homozygouse) or different (heterozygous -e.g.regular leaf/potatoleaf), one type of allele often dominates/masks other forms (regular leaf form masks potato leaf form). Genetically stable open pollinated (self pollinating) varieties have homozygous genes so all of the offspring generations will be identical to the parent generation... i.e. they are genetically stable.

Horticulturally speaking, a hybrid is an F1 having parents of two different varieties, and is thus heterozygous at many genes. When that plant self pollinates creating F2 seeds/plants those seeds/plants are no longer hybrids, but they still have a mix of genes from the parent plants and those genes start to form new combinations.

Parent = potatoleaf X parent = regular leaf --> F1 Regular leaf (with RL+PL allels). F1's offspring (F2) = RL+RL, RL+PL, RL+PL, PL+PL.

So if you grow out seed from a hybrid variety you will get gene segregation for all of the genes that were heterozygous in that hybrid (color, leaf type, flavor components etc.)

Now for your questions

1) You mean if you plant seeds from the fruits of an F1 hybrid, which would be F2 seeds.... They will grow but be different from the F1 and each other.

2) Yes, F1 hybrids are often more vigorous than their open pollinated parents, but not always.

3) Yes, F1aXF1b will work. This is what effectively occurs in all wild populations because individuals are not genetically stable varieties (homozygus at all genes) in those populations. You and I would be classified as horticultural hybrids because we each had dissimilar parents.

However, if you made this cross F1aXF1b they would now be the "P" generation and the offspring would be F1 ... [F1xF1other = F1, F1xF1same = F2].

What is confusing is that biologicaly speaking, a hybrid is the offspring of two different species (Lion x Tiger) and all progeny (F1>>>>F100) will remain hybrids. In most cases this type of cross does not work because the genetic combinations are incompatible either directly (embryo cannot develop), or indirectly (the hybrid offspring get outcompeted by the parent species and cannot form a continuing population) Horticulturally we almost never see biogical hybrids for vegetables (the apricot x prune is one exception) even broccoli x cauliflower = broccoflower is not a biological hybrid because all of the Kale vegetables are of the same species.
