Gardening with Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is a popular and well-reputed supplement in organic gardening. With the recent push towards “green” living, Epsom salt is an ideal answer to a variety of organic gardening needs. Both cost effective and gentle on your greenery, Epsom salt is an affordable and green treatment for your well-tended plants—both indoors and out.

Completely one-of-a-kind with a chemical structure unlike any other, Epsom salt (or Magnesium Sulfate) is one of the most economic and versatile salt-like substances in the world. Throughout time, Epsom salt has been known as a wonderful garden supplement, helping to create lush grass, full roses, and healthy, vibrant greenery. It has long been considered a planter’s “secret” ingredient to a lovely, lush garden, and is such a simple, affordable way to have a dramatic impact. Just as gourmet salt works with the ingredients in food to enhance and bring a meal to its full potential, Epsom salt enhances fertilizer and soil’s capabilities to bring a deeper level of vitality to your garden’s composition. Ultra Epsom Salt is the highest quality Epsom salt available, and is widely celebrated for its powerful benefits on natural life, ranging from household plants to shrubs, lawns and even trees.

Why Epsom Salt Works in the Garden

Please note that not all Epsom salts are created equal. When using Epsom salt in gardening, it is strongly recommended that the highest quality Epsom salt available is utilized.
Composed almost exclusively of Magnesium Sulfate, Epsom salt is intensely rich in these two minerals that are both crucial to healthy plant life. These same minerals which are so beneficial for bathing and using around the house are also a wonderful facilitator to your garden, helping it reach its fullest potential and creating a lush and vibrant outdoor space. Unlike common fertilizers, Epsom Salt does not build up in the soil over time, so it is very safe to use.

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is beneficial to plants from the beginning of their life, right when the seed begins to develop. It assists with the process of seed germination; infusing the seed with this important mineral and helping to strengthen the plant cell walls, so that the plant can receive essential nutrients. Magnesium also plays a crucial role in photosynthesis by assisting with the creation of chlorophyll, used by plants to convert sunlight into food. In addition, it is a wonderful help in allowing the plant to soak up phosphorus and nitrogen, which serve as vital fertilizer components for the soil. Magnesium is believed to bring more flowers and fruit to your garden, increasing the bounty as well as the beauty of your space.

SULFATE

Sulfate, a mineral form of sulfur found in nature, is an equally important nutrient for plant life. Sulfate is essential to the health and longevity of plants, and aides in the production of chlorophyll. It joins with the soil to make key nutrients more effective for plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Sulfate works in conjunction with Magnesium to create a “vitamin” full of minerals, nourishment and health benefits for your garden.

How to Use Epsom Salt in the Garden

EPSOM SALT FOR HOUSEPLANTS

Tomato plant and garden tools

Perhaps the most natural and easiest place to start with Ultra Epsom Salt is with the potted plants that are dispersed around your house and porch. Epsom salt is such a simple way to increase their blooming and health, and is something that you can include easily as a part of a normal routine. For potted plants, simply dissolve 2 tablespoons per gallon of water, and substitute this solution for normal watering at least once a month – although it is safe to do this as often as desired.

Adding this Epsom salt solution to houseplants that have been potted for a long time is especially useful, due in part to natural salt, which can build up in the soil and clog the root cells of the plant. Ultra Epsom Salt can help to clear up this accumulation of natural salts in the pot, and lead to a revival in the plant's health and vibrancy. It is also useful for a plant that has just been potted, as it will more easily receive the proper nutrients and have a healthy start in life. As general guidance, most plants need plenty of sun to receive the benefits of Ultra Epsom Salt (and photosynthesize), so be sure to keep typical houseplants in a sunny area of the home unless instructed otherwise. Using Ultra Epsom Salt with potted vegetable plants is a really wonderful idea as well, because it can increase the amount of fruit or vegetables you receive from the one plant. This is particularly beneficial to apartment dwellers and those with little or no personal yard space, as Ultra Epsom Salt can help you receive a large bounty within a confined space. A wonderful way to easily and effectively grow food!

FIRST PLANTING WITH EPSOM SALT

For setting up your garden and the initial planting stage, Ultra Epsom Salt is especially useful for getting a nourishing start. Prep your garden soil by sprinkling up to 1 cup of Ultra Epsom Salt per 100 square feet, and then work it into the soil before seeding or planting. This helps the seeds to germinate better, and start with a strong and healthy growth. It is also very beneficial for more mature plants that you are going to add to your garden, since the transition can be difficult for their growth and health.

VEGETABLE GARDENS & EPSOM SALT

For maintaining and creating a vegetable garden, Epsom salt can help you refresh and revitalize the garden you have already created—or create a healthy beginning to a new space. Ultra Epsom Salt is advised for use with all fruits, vegetables, and herbs (It is not advisable to use Epsom salt with the planting of sage—it is not beneficial for this particular plant). As previously mentioned, it does not cause build-up or any harm to plants when used, and so can be used safely and effectively during any stage of the plant’s life. For general purposes, Ultra Epsom Salt works well as a saline solution for a tank sprayer.Simply fill your tank sprayer (commonly available at gardening and home improvement stores) with 1 tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per gallon of water. Then spray your garden after the initial planting, later when it begins to grow (or after a month or so for transplants), and lastly when the vegetables begin to mature. It is believed that this practice will give you healthier vegetables, and a lush vegetable garden.
The advice above is wonderful for any vegetable or herb, but we do have additional advice for some varieties and situations:
Tomato plant

Tomatoes & Epsom Salt

Tomatoes are prone to magnesium deficiency later in the growing season, and display this through yellow leaves and less production. They can greatly benefit from Ultra Epsom Salt treatments both at the beginning of their planting and throughout their seasonal life. When gardening, simply add one or two tablespoons per hole before planting the seeds or transplants. Then as the tomato matures, either work in one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per foot of plant height around the base of the tomato plant (individually), or create the tank sprayer solution mentioned above and use that every two weeks.

Pepper plant

Peppers & Epsom Salt

Like tomatoes, peppers are also prone to magnesium deficiency and thrive much more fully with the use of Epsom salt. This can be done in the same way as tomatoes—through adding one or two tablespoons per hole before planting (for seeds and grown plants), and then twice a week based on the height of the plant (see above). A study conducted by the National Gardening Association discovered that four out of six home gardeners noticed that their Epsom salt-treated peppers were larger than those that were un-treated. Many gardeners credit their healthy, vibrant peppers and tomatoes to Epsom salt. This solution truly aides in the production level, aesthetic beauty and quality of the harvest produced.

FLOWER GARDENS & EPSOM SALT

Gardener trimming a rose bush
Like vegetable gardens, flower gardens also blossom more vibrantly and beautifully with the use of Ultra Epsom Salt in the soil and as a liquid solution. Epsom salt helps your garden to become the calming, serene environment you have been envisioning, and will increase the beauty of your home and landscape as well. To use, follow the guidelines outlined in the First Plantingsection for both brand new seedlings and more mature plants. Next, using a tank sprayer, fill with a liquid solution containing one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per gallon of water. This solution can be used as much as desired during the gardening season; but definitely after the initial planting, then later when you see growth (or after a month or so for transplants), and finally when they have received full bloom. If you don’t have a tank sprayer, you can always create this solution in a watering can using the ratio of 1 tablespoon Ultra Epsom Salt to 1 gallon of water.
Roses and flower bushes have some additional tips concerning the use of Epsom salt:

Roses & Epsom Salt

Roses in particular can greatly benefit from Epsom salt, and it is said to make foliage greener, healthier and lead to more canes and roses. Start by soaking unplanted rose bushes in one half cup of Ultra Epsom Salt per gallon of water before planting, to help the roots get stronger and firmer. Then, when planting, add one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per hole before inserting the rose bush. After the roses are planted (and to boost already planted roses), make the liquid Ultra Epsom Salt solution listed above for either a tank sprayer or watering can, or simply work in one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per foot of plant (individually). Once during the beginning of the season, it is also advised to work one half cup of Ultra Epsom Salt into the base of the plant to encourage blooming canes and healthy basal cane development.

Shrubs & Epsom Salt

For flowering and green shrubs, particularly evergreens, azaleas and rhododendrons, Epsom salt can improve the blooming of the flowers and the vibrancy of the greenery. Simply work in one tablespoon of Ultra Epsom Salt per nine square feet of bush into the soil, over the root zone, which allows the shrubs to absorb the nutritional benefits. Repeat this every two to four weeks for optimal results.

Lawn

LAWN CARE & EPSOM SALT

Just as Ultra Epsom Salt can revitalize your garden, so does it improve the greenery and sustainability of your lawn. Epsom salt is particularly useful for preventing a yellowing lawn and creating lusher, softer, deeply green grass. It can be applied using a tank sprayer (which can also be used on your flower and vegetable gardens), a lawn spreader, and by using a hose and spray attachment. Use three pounds per 1250 square feet (25’ x 50’), six pounds per 2500 square feet (50’ x 50’), and twelve pounds per 5000 square feet (50’ x 100’). If using a tank sprayer or a hose and spray attachment, make sure to dilute the salt in plenty of water (enough to make it dissolve), so that it is a concentrated solution.

Tree in a garden

TREES & EPSOM SALT

Trees, the largest and longest standing part of your garden, can also benefit from Epsom salt by allowing more minerals to be absorbed through the roots, giving you strong healthy trees to enjoy for years to come. If your trees bloom or produce fruit,Ultra Epsom Salt can be particularly useful due to its ability to increase the production of both flowers and bounty. Simply work in two tablespoons per nine square feet into the soil over the root zone three or four times a year. Planning to complete this at the beginning of each season is particularly helpful for preparing the tree for the change in weather, and allowing them to become stronger and healthier.

Gardening tips- How to start your garden

Tambah haru, belum menanam.. dah mula fikir “nanti pokok yg ditanam mati”.

Macam mana nak tahu pokok tu sakit? Kalau dah pokok sakit nak buat apa?

Salam & Salam sejahtera

Menanam tomato memang seronok. Walaupun saya bukan pemakan tegar tomato tapi saya cukup suka tanam tomato. Seronok tengok daun2 tomato di pokoknya yg segar & segah... makin seronok bila tengok bunga tomato.. paaaaling seronok bila tengok putik buahnya membesar.

Kalau nak tunggu berbuah masak & baru nak semai bijinya.. makan masa la pulak.

selain biji benih... kita boleh biakkan tomato dengan menggunakan keratan... apa ye istilah dia.. lupa lah pulak... its so d*mn easy to get another one dengan cara ni.

This is my way to do the cutting:

1. Apabila pokok tomato telah matang... cari tunas ketiak dia...

apa dia tunas ketiak??? huhuhuhuuu... apa ye istilah omputih dia? lupa la pulak..
Tunas ketiak adalah tunas yg tumbuh antara daun pokok & ranting or dahan... semua pokok ada tunas ketiak.. kecuali pokok2 monocots macam sawit, pisang & seangkatan dengannya....

pastikan tunas baru tu masih belum ada rupa utk mengeluarkn bunga.. kalau dah mula berbunga.. hmmm.. payahla..
tunas ketiak seperti dalam bulatan tu.. tengok baik2 yer...
2. Sediakan medium semaian.

Tomato yg ini... adalah tomato jenis yellowpear, saya tak begitu pasti tentang ketahanannya.. jadi saya guna peatmoss. tambahan lagi... anak pokok tomato yellowpear ni banyak dibaham ayam.. so yg selamatnya 3 pokok ni lah... kalau yg ni arwah.. alamatnya nak kena pegi beli benih lagi la jawabnya... ambil masa pulak nak membeli-menyemai-membesar... hati dah tak tahan dah.. so, as a back-up plan... kita biakkan sikit as a spare kot2 jadi apa2 karang... ngeeeeeee......

3. Gunakan pisau yg tajam, potong tunas tu. potong menyerongla... jgn la potong straight.

Kenapa pisau kena tajam? or gunting pun kena tajam apabila buat keratan/ pruning?

Bear in your mind... dont ever overdose!! macam kita jugak... makan satu kawah sekali hadap tak mungkin la akan kenyang sebulan... kot arwah terus hadooo....

Bila dah selesai mencelup, sila la cucuk dalam medium semaian dlam tray/ or even polibeg terus pun takpe.

cucukkan keratan dalam tray semaian.

akar cantik terbentuk.. dah ready masuk rumah baru!
Orait... dah dapat extra pokok yellowpear tomato. Kita tunggu pokok induk dia berbuah.. sebab sekarang ni dah berbunga pun.

This is not yellowpear tomato! Cuma hiasan sahaja

Gardening time..... my gardening way..

My friend always call me cheapskate! yg benarnyaa... bukan cheapskate lor.... cermat la... & tak berapa nak rajin... tapi mauuu....

sebelum ni... my gardening method memang "method blasah hentam keromo" aje... as long as pokok2 tu boleh hidup subur... no hal la kan... haha...

but, my method tanam pokok adalah sebab saya cuma tanam suka2 ajer.. bukan atas sebab nak menjual sayur... bear in ur mind... i'm not petani sayur! so, my method ada pro & cons... pro... mudah & cepat.... & the cons.. ofcourse la kalo ikut caraku ini... production sayur petani per tan hectares gila2 punya down laaa..... for hobbyist... kalo nak ikut buleh... kalu xtanak ikut pun buleh sangatttt..... ikut suka la... kalu nak buat betul2 ada banyak referances yg boleh digoogle2 & banyak buku pertanian available...

& for those yg nak guna teknik hentam keromo like mine... make sure u know the basic/ principle of gardening... so that kalau pokok  x menjadi... u know what makes them x jadi...

biasanya.... this is how i did it:

To prepare tanah utk tanaman:

  1. clearkan all weeds dalam planter box or any tempat yg nak ditanam...
  2. gembur2 kan tanah... use cangkul for fast & easy way.... try to gemburkan dalam sejengkal dalam.
  3. taburkan baja... i use baja kimia biasa... NPK 15.. baja ni biasanya kaler hijau
  4. siram air & tinggalkan dalam 1 minggu...
  5. 1 week after... gembur2 kan tanah tu balik & tabur lagi baja...
  6. then 1 week after lagi... dah boleh mula cambahkan biji benih atas tanah tu...so, this soil pretreatment will take about 2 weeks.

TO START SOWING SEEDS

u need sedikit creativity to sow the seeds kalau tanak buat kije lebih.... best way is to buy tray utk semaian benih & buat semaian atas tu & after dah cukup matang... boleh transfer ke tanah..

ALTERNATIVELY... kalau takmo kuar duit beli tray tu & takmo buat kije2 transfer anak pokok tu....do like mine:
  1. if nak tanam sayur berdaun macam kangkung or bayam.. or sawi.. biasanya i will make a line with kayu or apa2 yg boleh buang garisan panjang & berlubang... just lorekkan tanah tu & then taburkan biji benih dalam lubang tu... then kambuskan sikit biji benih tu...
  2. then boleh siram air & tunggu la dia bercambah.... siram secara sprink ye... jangan pakai cebok air.. abis lari biji benih tu nanti.
  3. bila benih dah mula bercambah (masa percambahan depend on jenis sayur)... taburkan tanah sikit2 atas anak pokok yg baru bercambah tu...... ambik je la tanah kat dalam planter box tu jugak... tapi hati2 jgn tabur banyak sangat.. nanti tenggelam plak pokok tu.. mati plak nanti...
  4. sepanjang proses pembesaran pokok2 tu... kenela selalu tabur2 kan tanah supaya pangkal pokok tu tenggelam..therefore pokok tu boleh tumbuh tegak...
anak kailan yg dah bercambah... masa ni dah sesuai utk taburkan tanah sikit2 kat pangkal pokok...
bunga kailan

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE:

Gunakan bekas telur yg dah digunakan dirumah (kalau ada la)..ni dah tunjuk dlm posting smalam...

  1. penuhkan tanah semaian dalam bekas telur..
  2. letakkan bekas telur di dikawasan yg sesuai utk pertumbuhan biji benih.. biasanya saya letak kat dalam raised bed pokok lain yg dah besar.. so, dia akan dapat partial sun
  3. siram sampai bekas tu basah lenjun
  4. korek tengah2 lubang tu sikit.. dlm 1/2 to 1 cm dalam je... but depend on benih jugak la.. kalau benih halus macam daun sup.. korek sikit je... dlm 1/2 cm...
  5. masukkan biji benih dlm lubang2 tu... then tutup dgn tanah sikit.. just to cover the seeds aje
  6. then.. spray dengan air.. nak selamat guna sprayer bottle je...
  7. after benih bercambah.. biarkan sampai anak benih dah stabil.... means sampai keluar daun sebenar.. usually after 4-5 daun... then baru boleh transfer ke atas tanah... samaada batas, raised bed macam saya punya or nak letak dalam pasu je pun ok...
  8. bila mengalih pokok yg disemai menggunakan bekas telur ni.. kena extra careful... supaya proses pengalihan tu x effect akar pokok... ada 2 option... basahkan bekas telur tu sampai lenjun & potong je kesemua lubang yg ada anak benih pokok tu... or biarkn bekas tu betul2 kering... then slowly & hati2.. tolak lubang semaian tu daripada bawah bekas sampai seluruh tanah tu tertanggal... cer tengok gambar kat bawah ni..
  9. then... boleh tanam la...
dah tercabut dari bekas telur

anak sawi yg dah selamat ditransfer ke tanah

few weeks after that

mula membesar

lalalalaaaa.....  more than 4 weeks

PEMBAJAAN

pokok2 berdaun macam ni... x sesuai diberi baja biji... much better diberi baja cecair... so, whether u buy foliar or boleh juga beli baja biji NPK biasa... I use baja NPK biasa... reason: saya malas nak beli baja cecair/ baja serbuk yg dicairkan... sebab terasa banyaknyaaa nak kene beli baja....
  1. MY WAY: just guna baja biji tu... ambikla dalam segenggam & larutkan dalam sebaldi air my baldi is around 40 L kot... hmm.. lebih kurang la.. pandai2 la nak larutkan tu... biasanya saya just masukkan baja & air dalam gayung & ketuk/ ramas baja tu sampai hancur... then mix with baki air dalam baldi...pastu siram jek kat pokok sayur tu...
  2. baja kene diberikan pada pokok tiap2 minggu.. or paling terukpun 2 minggu sekali... kalo kedekut baja.. memangla pokok kurengggg.....
  3. bila nak start membaja? biasanya after 1 week pokok dialihkan dari bekas semaian.. or bila pokok semaian dah mula keluarkan 4-6 helai daun.. dah boleh la tu... jangan membaja selepas alihkan pokok2.. tak kirala pokok besar atau kecik... biarkan pokok tu selesa dalam rumah baru dia tu dulu.. then baru fed dgn baja
mint

sage
oregano

big boss tengah cek buah cili...
mesti nak kena sentuh buah... kalau x.. x puas hati!

harvest time!

KAWALAN PENYAKIT:

  • we hope to get sayur yg x de disembur2 dgn racun.. or very minimum racun.... or kalo terpaksa meracun pun... kita tahu banyak mana racun yg kita sembur pada pokok & kita aware pada racun tu!
for home gardening... sebab kita takla tanam banyak... sebanyak sehektar or seekar sayur... disease control should be easier...
serangan bena.. kalo dah teruk sila guna malathion...

my experience:
  • beware of semut! biasanyanya semut liar memang akan bawa penyakit... kutu esp... dah ada semut.. dah ada kutu... cepatla penyakit2 macam black spot serang pokok... to control this... i use racun semut... ada racun yg jenis umpan. semut jumpa.. then dia bawak balik sarang dia... ramai2 semut makan & mati la semua satu batallion... its very effective... but jgnla tabur umpan tu kat pokok... racun tuuu.... letakkan dalam bekas like botol or apa2 yg sesuai... cari laluan semut tu di luar planter box kita & letak umpan tu kat situ.. in 2 weeks time... u can see dramatic reduction of semut kat pokok sayur... bila semut dah kurang.. biasanya pokok tu akan dapat hidup lama. racun jenis ni boleh dapat kat kedai hardware.
  • control of microbial infections (biasanya reput pangkal & serangan hama & apa2 jenis kumbang ntah masa pokok kecik): for this... i will use fungiside & insecticides. biasanya saya guna beberapa jenis. for fungicide: i use benomyl & zineb... for insectisede: i use cypermethrin , malathion & also sulphur... i will only spray these racun masa pokok2 tu kecik... for pokok sayur daun..i will spray racun2 tu masa pokok2 tu berumur 2-3 minggu.. secara alternate la... minggu pertama fungiside.. then week after insecticides... pastu  no more racun... sebab aku nak makan... pokok2 macam ni biasanya dalam 2-3 bulan dah boleh kutip makan dah... for pokok berbuah.... i will spray at 2-3 weeeks  mula2 tu jugak.... but bila dia dah mula mengeluarkan bunga.. that's the another time yg aku buat semburan racun....to avoid putik buah gugur sebab microbial infection & halau serangga datang dekat utk attack daun/ buah.... pastu dah x sembur... so, kalo masih ada infection, biasanya buatla manual control... kutip daun2 kena infection tu after first round bunga jantan (took about 1 week je kot.... rasanya...)... then  buang/ bakar. paling penting jika terpaksa menggunakan racun, fahami dulu cara racun bertindak & baca label baik2... semua racun ada panduan keselamatan.. bila waktu selamat yg kita boleh petik tanaman selepas meracun... ada yg selepas seminggu diracun.. selepas 14 hari etc... so READ!!!
  • kawalan siput babi: yg ni pun satu hal jugak... punya la siput babi ni kuat makan... batang pokok bendi yg tinggi satu meter pun boleh patah dimakan nya.. sabo jekla... for this... i will use racun siput.. beli kat nursery & boleh tabur kat kawasan pokok.. x perlu dalam planter box... racun tu sebenarnya bercampur dengan feromones siput... bila racun tu kene embun malam... (siput kan kuar waktu malam) dia akan spread feromones tu & attract siput. bila siput pegi jenguk or pegang racun tu... masa tu racun tu akan berpindah kat siput tu & dia akan mati.... selesai prob siput. tabur2 garam kat keliling pokok not so recommended.. nanti pertumbuhan pokok terencat... sayang pokok tu nanti.
